Velvet is texture's grand gesture — a dense pile that drinks light and gives it back in soft depth no flat fabric can imitate. This page gathers our velvet family: velours, crushed velvets and stretch piles, for eveningwear, festive dressing, and the cushions and home touches that make a room feel expensive.

One rule governs everything in the velvet department: nap direction. The pile lies one way, and colour shifts with it — stroke it both ways and watch the shade change. Cut every pattern piece with the nap running the same direction (and buy the extra half metre this uses), or the finished garment will look two-toned in ways nobody intended.

Press velvets from the reverse on a soft surface — never crush the pile with a hot iron face-down. Treated with those two courtesies, velvet is far friendlier than its reputation.
