If your machine is skipping stitches, laddering knits or punching holes in fine fabric, the fix is almost never the machine — it's the needle. Machine needles are consumables with a job description: universals for wovens, ballpoint and stretch needles for knits and elastane (they slide between the loops instead of piercing them), jeans needles for denim and heavy layers, and fine points for delicate sheers.
Two habits transform stitch quality overnight: match the needle type to the fabric family, and change the needle far more often than feels necessary — a fresh needle every big project, or roughly every eight hours of sewing. A blunt needle is the most expensive false economy in the sewing room.
Keep a spare pack of each type in the drawer; they weigh nothing in the parcel.
