Sheers are the fabrics light passes through — chiffons and fine voiles that float rather than hang. They're what overlays, floaty sleeves, scarves, occasion dresses and dreamy summer layers are made of: nothing else moves the same way.

The honest brief before you buy: sheers are the advanced class of dressmaking. They shift while you cut (sandwich between tissue paper — old dressmaker's trick), they want a fine sharp needle and small stitches, and their seams show — which is why French seams, which hide everything, were practically invented for chiffon. None of this is beyond a careful improver; it's just not the fabric for your first fortnight.

The reward is a category of garment no other fabric can make. Sample first — sheerness and colour both read differently against skin than on screen.
